Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India Imposes ₹1 Crore Penalty on Nissan Renault Financial Services India for Violating Insurance Distribution and Motor Insurance Service Provider Norms

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore on Nissan Renault Financial Services India Private. Limited. for violations related to insurance distribution norms and Motor Insurance Service Provider (MISP) guidelines.
  • The regulatory action followed an onsite inspection conducted by IRDAI in September 2024, which revealed multiple compliance and governance deficiencies in the company's insurance operations.
  • The company was found to have violated provisions governing the functioning of Corporate Agents and adherence to motor insurance service regulations.
  • IRDAI directed the company to strengthen its compliance framework and ensure strict adherence to applicable insurance regulations and guidelines.
  • The regulator instructed that the order be placed before the Board of Directors of the Corporate Agent in its upcoming board meeting for review and discussion.
  • The company has been directed to submit a copy of the board meeting minutes to IRDAI after the matter is discussed.
  • IRDAI further ordered the Corporate Agent to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 90 days from the date of the order.

Reserve Bank of India’s FY26 Balance Sheet Grows 20.6% to Rs 91.97 Lakh Crore, Says Annual Report 2025–26

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its Annual Report 2025–26 and submitted it to the Central Government under Section 53(2) of the RBI Act, 1934.
  • The report contains the Central Board of Directors’ review of the working of the RBI for the year ended 31 March 2026.
  • The Balance Sheet (BS) of RBI expanded by 20.6% during FY26, reflecting significant growth in the central bank's assets and investments.
  • The size of RBI’s balance sheet increased from Rs 76.25 lakh crore in FY25 to Rs 91.97 lakh crore as on 31 March 2026, registering an increase of Rs 15.72 lakh crore.
  • RBI transferred Rs 1.09 lakh crore to the Contingency Fund (CF) as a provision to strengthen its financial resilience.
  • On the asset side, the increase was primarily driven by a sharp rise in domestic investments, gold holdings, and foreign investments.
  • Domestic investments increased by 44.9%, rising to Rs 22.59 lakh crore during FY26.
  • RBI’s gold holdings recorded the highest growth, increasing by 63.8% to Rs 10.94 lakh crore.
  • Foreign investments rose by 7.9% and reached Rs 52.68 lakh crore as of 31 March 2026.
  • The report highlighted that the amount involved in banking fraud cases increased significantly by 46%, reaching Rs 48,021 crore in FY26 compared to Rs 32,803 crore in FY25.
  • Despite the increase in the fraud amount, the number of fraud cases reported by the banking sector declined sharply.
  • The total number of fraud cases decreased from 23,722 cases in FY25 to 10,114 cases in FY26.

Government of India Releases Provisional Unaudited Accounts for FY 2025–26

  • The Accounts of the Government of India for the Financial Year 2025–26 (Provisional/Unaudited) have been consolidated and published, presenting key fiscal highlights.
  • During 2025–26, the Government of India received a total ₹33,85,982 crore, which is 4% of the Revised Estimates (RE) 2025–26 for total receipts.
  • The total receipts comprise Net Tax Revenue to Centre (₹26,23,264 crore), Non-Tax Revenue (₹6,78,961 crore), and Non-Debt Capital Receipts (₹83,757 crore).
  • The Non-Debt Capital Receipts include Recovery of Loans (₹24,617 crore) and Miscellaneous Capital Receipts (₹59,140 crore).
  • The Government transferred ₹13,92,971 crore to State Governments as devolution of share in central taxes, which is ₹1,06,086 crore higher than the previous year.
  • The total expenditure of the Government of India stood at ₹49,05,151 crore, which is 8% of the corresponding RE 2025–26.
  • Out of total expenditure, ₹38,36,032 crore was spent on the Revenue Account, while ₹10,69,119 crore was on the Capital Account.
  • Within Revenue Expenditure, ₹12,42,575 crore was incurred on Interest Payments, reflecting the cost of government borrowing.
  • Additionally, ₹4,53,854 crore was spent on Major Subsidies, supporting welfare and economic support measures.

AUKUS Nations Launch Joint Underwater Drone Programme to Strengthen Maritime Defence Capabilities

  • The AUKUS security alliance comprising Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States of America (USA) launched a joint underwater drone programme under AUKUS Pillar Two.

Key Highlights :

  • The programme aims to co-develop advanced Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) and related technologies to strengthen the maritime capabilities of the three partner nations.
  • The announcement was made by Richard Marles, Pete Hegseth, and John Healey at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.
  • The initiative seeks to develop a suite of highly adaptable, multi-mission UUV payloads capable of supporting a wide range of undersea military operations.
  • A major objective of the programme is to help AUKUS partners maintain their collective strategic advantage in the maritime domain amid evolving security challenges.
  • The first delivery of UUV technology under the programme is expected by 2027.
  • The project falls under AUKUS Pillar Two, which focuses on cooperation in advanced defence and emerging technologies beyond nuclear-powered submarines.
  • Key technology areas under the collaboration include quantum computing, long-range hypersonic weapons, undersea robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and advanced autonomous systems.

  • The Government of West Bengal has begun the enrolment process for the Annapurna Yojana.
  • Under the scheme, eligible women will receive ₹3,000 per month as financial assistance,
  • The existing Lakshmir Bhandar scheme will continue until the full implementation of the Annapurna Yojana,
  • The scheme is applicable to women aged 25 to 60 years,
  • Eligibility criteria include women who are not permanent government employees, not receiving salaries or pensions, and not paying income tax,
  • The West Bengal government has initiated a verification and database cleansing exercise for beneficiaries of the proposed scheme,
  • Existing beneficiaries of the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme will be migrated to the Annapurna Yojana, except:

  • During the event, he inaugurated an indigenously developed Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition system (PECVD) at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science,
  • The system has been developed for the fabrication of India’s first amorphous silicon solar cell,
  • He also inaugurated Research Entrepreneurship for Translation, Innovation and Navigation, a centre aimed at connecting fundamental research with entrepreneurship, startups and societal applications.
  • The institute is known as the cradle of eminent scientists including Jagadish Chandra Bose, Meghnad Saha, Satyendra Nath Bose and Sir C V Raman,

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances has launched the Portal for National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment, 2025
  • The National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment is a biennial assessment framework developed by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances to measure the effectiveness of electronic governance service delivery from the citizen’s perspective,
  • The framework is based on the Online Service Index of the United Nations Electronic Government Survey and is customised for India’s federal structure,
  • It evaluates the availability, accessibility and maturity of online service delivery across States, Union Territories and Central Ministries and Departments,
  • Government portals are classified into two categories: State, Union Territory, City and Central Ministry Portals and State, Union Territory, City and Central Ministry Service Portals,
  • The framework covers both Government-to-Citizen services and Government-to-Business services,
  • Key sectors covered include finance, labour and employment, education, local governance and utility services, social welfare, environment including fire services, tourism, public grievance, transport and travel,
  • The National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment 2025 proposes inclusion of services of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs as an additional focus area,

NITI Aayog Releases Roadmap for India’s Semiconductor Industry Till 2035

  • NITI Aayog has released a roadmap report titled “Future of India’s Semiconductor Industry”, outlining a vision for the sector up to 2035.
  • The report was prepared by the Frontier Tech Hub of NITI Aayog.
  • According to the report, India currently imports 90–95% of the semiconductors it consumes.
  • India spent nearly $150 billion on semiconductor imports between Financial Year 2017 and Financial Year 2025.
  • If current trends continue, annual semiconductor import costs could rise to around $240 billion by 2035.
  • India’s semiconductor demand is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 19%, reaching around $90 billion by 2030 and exceeding $200 billion by 2035.
  • The roadmap aims to build a semiconductor value chain worth $120–150 billion by 2035, accounting for 10–13% of the global semiconductor market.
  • It also targets achieving 35–50% self-sufficiency in domestic semiconductor demand by 2035.
  • The report identifies five strategic pillars for the sector's development:

    • Policy and Investment

    • People
    • Partnership
  • Under the Partnership pillar, the report recommends deeper cooperation with trusted semiconductor partners such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Becomes First Company Approved Under Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded Industrial Training Institutes Scheme

  • ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has become the first company to receive approval for a Strategic Investment Plan under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded Industrial Training Institutes (PM-SETU) Scheme.
  • The approval was granted by the National Steering Committee, chaired by Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, during its third meeting held at Kaushal Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The approved Strategic Investment Plan covers the Visakhapatnam Industrial Training Institute Cluster in Andhra Pradesh.
  • With this approval, Andhra Pradesh has become the first state to operationalise an industry partnership under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded Industrial Training Institutes Scheme.
  • Andhra Pradesh has also become the first state to formally onboard an Anchor Industry Partner, enabling industry-led management of government Industrial Training Institutes.
  • The initiative is expected to strengthen industry participation in vocational education and improve employability outcomes.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded Industrial Training Institutes Scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2025.
  • The scheme has a total outlay of ₹60,000 crore.
  • It aims to upgrade 1,000 government Industrial Training Institutes across India through a hub-and-spoke model.
  • The scheme seeks to modernise vocational training infrastructure and align skill development programmes with industry requirements.

Sarbananda Sonowal Launches Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY25

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY25 during the 37th Foundation Day celebrations of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai.
  • LPPI has been developed under the ‘Sagar Aankalan’ framework as a national benchmarking mechanism to assess and improve the operational performance of Indian ports.
  • The index evaluates ports across three cargo segments: dry bulk, liquid bulk, and container cargo.
  • Performance is measured using indicators such as cargo handled, vessel turnaround time, berth idle time, pre-berthing waiting time, container dwell time, and ship berth day output.
  • The framework assigns equal weightage to both absolute performance and year-on-year improvement.
  • The Minister also launched four digital initiatives developed by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
  • These include a 24x7 grievance redressal module under the e-Navik platform, a ship registration module on the e-Samudra platform, a medical practitioner module, and a unified ship recycling credit note module.
  • He also unveiled the Unified Ship Recycling Portal under the Ship Recycling Credit Scheme.
  • The scheme is part of the government's ₹70,000-crore Maritime Development Package announced in 2025.
  • Under the scheme, ship owners recycling vessels at Hong Kong Convention-compliant Indian shipyards will receive a credit note equivalent to 40% of the vessel’s scrap value.
  • The credit note can be redeemed against the cost of new shipbuilding projects in India.
  • The initiatives aim to improve port efficiency, strengthen maritime governance, promote digitalisation, and support sustainable ship recycling.

  • For the first time, the Indian Haj Mission, under the Ministry of Minority Affairs (Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju), won two Labbaytum Awards in the Best Haj Coordination and Communication category.
  • The awards were presented during the Khitamahu Misk Ceremony held in Saudi Arabia, marking the formal conclusion of the 2026 Haj season.
  • Consul General Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri and Consul Haj Sadaf Choudhary represented India at the award ceremony.
  • The Indian Haj Mission 2026 was led by Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia, and Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri, Consul General of India in Jeddah.
  • Approximately 175,000 Indian pilgrims performed Haj in 2026.
  • The Labbaytum Awards are presented annually by the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah to recognise excellence in pilgrim services and management.
  • The awards highlight India's effective coordination, communication, and service delivery for Haj pilgrims.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant Swears In Five New Judges of the Supreme Court

  • Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered the oath of office to five new judges of the Supreme Court of India on 02 June 2026.
  • The five newly appointed judges are Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Arun Palli, and Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani (V.) Mohana.
  • The appointments were approved by the Central Government based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium, made during its meetings on 22 May 2026 and 27 May 2026.
  • President Droupadi Murmu appointed the five judges under Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
  • Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal officially announced the appointments through a social media post.
  • The oath ceremony took place shortly after the promulgation of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, which increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court.
  • The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court was increased from 34 to 38 judges (including the Chief Justice of India).
  • With the induction of the five judges, the working strength of the Supreme Court increased to 37 judges, leaving only one vacancy in the apex court.
  • The appointments represent the first set of Supreme Court appointments approved by the Collegium headed by CJI Surya Kant.

  • Justice Sheel Nagu previously served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court.
  • Justice Sheel Nagu was born on 01 January 1965, enrolled with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1987, became an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2011, and a Permanent Judge in 2013.
  • Justice Shree Chandrashekhar previously served as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court before his elevation.
  • Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was born on 25 May 1965, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1993, specialized in civil and criminal law, and became an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court in 2013.
  • His elevation is significant because it restores representation from Jharkhand in the Supreme Court.
  • Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva previously served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Born on 26 December 1964, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva graduated from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 1988 and was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2013.
  • Justice Arun Palli served as the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court before joining the Supreme Court.
  • Born on 18 September 1964, Justice Arun Palli served as Additional Advocate General of Punjab (2004–2007) and became a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in December 2013.
  • Venkita Subramani Mohana (V. Mohana) is a Senior Advocate elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court.
  • Mohana became only the second woman advocate in India's history to be directly elevated from the Bar to the Supreme Court, after Justice Indu Malhotra in 2018.
  • Her recommendation marks the first time since August 2021 that the Collegium recommended a woman candidate for appointment to the Supreme Court.
  • At the time of her appointment, Justice B. V. Nagarathna was the only woman judge on the Supreme Court bench and also a member of the Supreme Court Collegium.

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Takes Over as 20th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman & Nicobar Command

  • Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty assumed charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) at Sri Vijaya Puram on 01 June 2026.

About Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty :

  • He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1989 and is a specialist in Gunnery and Missiles.
  • Vice Admiral McCarty is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the National Defence College, New Delhi.
  • He brings over 36 years of distinguished naval service across operational, staff, training, and tri-service domains.
  • His sea tenures include serving as a member of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi and completing all specialist appointments onboard the frontline destroyer.
  • He has commanded three major Indian Naval warships: INS Ajay, INS Khanjar, and INS Shivalik.
  • His important training and staff appointments include Training Commander at the Indian Naval Academy, Command Plans Officer at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, and Commodore Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters.
  • After promotion to Flag Rank in 2020, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) and Controller of Personnel Services.
  • In 2023, he commanded the Western Fleet as Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet (FOCWF), one of the most important operational fleet commands of the Indian Navy.
  • He became the 10th Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy in 2024.

  • The Indian Army successfully completed operational trials of the Divyastra Mk-1, an indigenous AI-powered tactical loitering munition system, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
  • Divyastra Mk-1 was developed by Hoverit, a Lucknow-based defence technology startup, with approximately 95% indigenous content.
  • The system has been designed to strengthen Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and enhance operational effectiveness along India's border regions.

Key Highlights :

  • Divyastra Mk-1 is an AI-powered tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) developed for intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions.
  • The system has an operational range of up to 500 km, making it suitable for long-range tactical missions.

  • Municipal officials are required to upload before-and-after photographs of the cleaned or repaired site, ensuring transparency and accountability in service delivery.
  • The app also includes a citizen feedback mechanism, allowing residents to evaluate the response and effectiveness of municipal authorities.
  • In its pilot phase, the app has been launched across 10 municipalities of West Bengal.
