National Statistical Office Releases Q1FY27 Gross Domestic Product Estimates, India Records 7.8% Growth

• The National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Quarterly Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Q1 (April–June 2026) of FY2026–27.

Key Highlights :

• India’s Real GDP grew by 7.8% in Q1FY27, higher than the 6.9% growth recorded in Q1FY26.
• India’s 7.8% real GDP growth in Q1FY27 surpassed the RBI’s 7% estimate and represented the fastest Q1 growth in recent years.
• The Q1FY27 release is the first GDP estimate to incorporate the updated National Accounts Statistics (NAS), which revised annual estimates for FY2022–23, FY2023–24 and FY2024–25.
• The revised NAS series incorporates the new Output Producer Price Index (PPI) and Banking Services Price Index (BSPI), both having a base year of 2022–23.
• The compilation of Quarterly GDP Estimates follows the Benchmark-Indicator Methodology, under which the previous financial year’s estimates are benchmarked using relevant sectoral indicators.
• India’s GDP at constant prices (2022–23) was estimated at ₹81.36 lakh crore in Q1FY27, compared with ₹75.46 lakh crore in Q1FY26.
• India’s GDP at current prices was estimated at ₹88.27 lakh crore in Q1FY27, compared with ₹80.00 lakh crore in Q1FY26, representing a 10.3% growth rate.
• Real GVA (Gross Value Added) grew by 8.2% in Q1FY27, while nominal GDP grew by 10.3%.
• Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) increased by 11.9% in real terms, raising its share in GDP to 34.3%, compared with 31.4% in the previous year.
• Manufacturing was a major growth driver, recording 9.2% growth in Q1FY27.
• The services sector recorded 10% growth, making it another major contributor to India’s Q1FY27 economic expansion.
• Construction grew by 7.7%, while electricity, gas and utilities grew by 8.9% during Q1FY27.
• Agriculture recorded 3.6% growth in Q1FY27, while the mining sector contracted by 2.4%.
• The strong 7.8% GDP growth reflected robust activity in manufacturing, services, and investment, although unfavourable base effects, crude oil prices, external risks, and El Niño could moderate growth in the coming quarters.
• MoSPI introduced a new National Accounts Series with 2022–23 as the base year in February 2026, incorporating updated data and improved methodology.
• Under the new series, manufacturing GVA uses a double-deflation approach, under which output and intermediate consumption are deflated separately using relevant Producer Price Indices.
• The next quarterly GDP estimates, covering July–September 2026 (Q2FY27), are scheduled to be released on 30 November 2026.

PhonePe Introduces UPI 123Pay to Enable Digital Payments on Feature Phones

• PhonePe, a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP), launched PhonePe UPI 123Pay, enabling feature-phone users to make UPI transactions without an internet connection.
• UPI 123Pay works through an SMS-based architecture, allowing UPI payments even in areas with low or 2G network connectivity.
• The service is built on the UPI framework developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and uses basic telecom infrastructure to provide secure and seamless digital payments.
• With the launch of PhonePe UPI 123Pay, PhonePe became the first major TPAP to bring UPI payment facilities to feature phones.
• The service is particularly designed for people who do not own smartphones or live in areas with limited internet connectivity, thereby supporting financial inclusion.
• PhonePe UPI 123Pay will be pre-installed on selected entry-level feature phones manufactured by Nokia, HMD, Lava International and itel Mobile.
• Additional handset manufacturers are expected to join the UPI 123Pay ecosystem in the coming months.
• The service supports both Person-to-Person (P2P) and Person-to-Merchant (P2M) payments through a mobile number or UPI ID.
• Users with camera-enabled feature phones can also make merchant payments by scanning UPI QR codes.
• UPI 123Pay also provides access to bank balance and transaction history, making basic banking services easier for feature-phone users.
• PhonePe introduced an AI-powered, voice-first helpline to simplify UPI onboarding and usage for first-time and non-smartphone users.
• Unlike conventional IVR systems, the AI-powered helpline provides step-by-step assistance and answers basic UPI-related queries.
• The AI-powered voice helpline is available in English and 12 Indian languages, improving accessibility for users across India.

India Post Payments Bank Marks 9th Foundation Day with DakPay Sound Box and New Digital Platforms

• India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) celebrated its 9th Foundation Day on 1 September 2026, reaffirming its commitment to accessible, inclusive and technology-enabled financial services.
• IPPB was launched on 1 September 2018 and is established under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, with 100% equity owned by the Government of India.
• IPPB leverages the extensive India Post network and digital technology to provide last-mile banking, digital payments, government benefits and other financial services.

Key Highlights :

9th Foundation Day – New Initiatives :

• IPPB launched the DakPay Sound Box for Merchants to simplify and strengthen digital payment acceptance for merchants.
• IPPB launched a Digital Insurance Technology Platform to provide customers access to Life, Health and General Insurance solutions.
• IPPB introduced a Digital Mutual Fund Platform to provide customers with a simple and accessible digital investment experience.
• These initiatives expand IPPB’s services beyond banking and payments to include insurance, investment and financial security.

Major Milestones as on 31 March 2026 :

• IPPB’s pan-India customer base reached 13.25 crore, with 77% customers from rural areas and 49% women customers.
• Customers had deposited ₹29,104 crore with IPPB as of 31 March 2026.
• IPPB processed ₹21.61 lakh crore worth of digital financial transactions, including ₹7.41 lakh crore in UPI remittances.
• Around 6.5 crore Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) beneficiaries received approximately ₹1.55 lakh crore through the system.
• IPPB recorded 06 crore Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions, involving disbursements of ₹36,140 crore.
• IPPB issued 29.43 lakh Digital Life Certificates to pensioners, supporting convenient digital pension verification.
• The Bank facilitated 9.47 crore Aadhaar Mobile Updates and 1.35 crore Bal Aadhaar enrolments.

New Savings Account Variants :

• SHG Savings Account was introduced as a secure banking solution specifically designed for Self Help Groups (SHGs) and rural micro-entrepreneurs.
• Surakshit Savings Account provides ₹25,000 cyber-insurance cover against risks such as phishing, spoofing and SIM jacking, along with Premium Savings Account benefits.
• Sampoorna Savings Account combines Aarogya wellness benefits and Surakshit cyber protection with the regular benefits of a Premium Savings Account.

National Land Monetization Corporation to Conduct E-Auction of 459 Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited Land Parcels in Visakhapatnam

• National Land Monetization Corporation (NLMC), a 100% Government of India-owned enterprise, has announced the e-auction of land assets owned by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL–Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
• NLMC functions under the administrative control of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Ministry of Finance.
• A total of 459 land parcels covering 93,572.21 square yards are being offered for outright sale with clear, encumbrance-free government titles.
• The individual land parcels range in size from approximately 128.94 square yards to 2,728 square yards.
• Quikr India Pvt. Ltd. (QIPL) has been appointed as the Transaction Consultant for facilitating the auction process.
• HB Colony, Maddilapalem includes 456 residential MIG/LIG plots located in an established urban area with civic and social infrastructure.
• The HB Colony properties have 24- to 60-foot concrete approach roads and are located close to National Highway 16 (NH-16).
• Auto Nagar, Gajuwaka includes a 2,728-square-yard contiguous commercial parcel in Block 2, located approximately 0.5 km from NH-16, along with two residential plots in Block 3.
• The e-auction will be conducted through the RailTel E-Nivida e-Procurement Platform on 12 October 2026 and 16 October 2026.
• Eligible bidders must complete online registration and KYC verification and submit an Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of ₹2 lakh per plot within the prescribed timeline.
• The auction initiative supports NLMC’s core mandate of monetizing surplus land and non-core assets held by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) and government agencies.
• The digitally enabled bidding process aims to provide eligible investors, developers and individual participants with a transparent mechanism to acquire land assets.

NCDEX Introduces ‘RAINCHNNAI’ Contract to Hedge Chennai’s Northeast Monsoon Risks

• The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) launched ‘RAINCHNNAI’, a rainfall-based weather derivatives contract, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).
• The RAINCHNNAI contract is designed to help market participants hedge risks associated with the Northeast (NE) monsoon.
• The cash-settled futures contract covers September–December rainfall deviations in Chennai and addresses risks related to the retreating monsoon, which contributes nearly 70% of Chennai’s annual rainfall.
• RAINCHNNAI complements NCDEX’s earlier ‘RAINMUMBAI’ rainfall-based weather derivatives contract.
• The contract provides a transparent and standardized risk-management tool for sectors such as agriculture, logistics and urban infrastructure, which are dependent on monsoon patterns.
• The rainfall data used to develop the contract has been sourced from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
• The contract uses rainfall data from the Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam weather stations in Chennai.
• RAINCHNNAI is based on the Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model, which measures rainfall deviation from the Long Period Average (LPA).
• The CDR model uses more than 50 years of historical rainfall data to assess rainfall deviations.
• The contract operates as a cash-settled futures contract, meaning there is no physical delivery or loss assessment
• The tick size of the RAINCHNNAI contract is 1 millimetre (mm).
• The maximum order lot size for the contract is 50 lots.

State Bank of India Research Upgrades India’s FY27 Gross Domestic Product Growth Forecast to 7.3%

• The Economic Research Department (ERD) of the State Bank of India (SBI Research) raised India’s GDP growth projection for FY2026-27 (FY27) to 7.3%, from its previous estimate of 6.6%.
• The upward revision was made after the Indian economy recorded 7.8% GDP growth in Q1FY27 (April–June), compared with 6.9% in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.
• SBI Research projected India’s real GDP growth at 7.3% in Q2FY27 (July–September), 7.2% in Q3FY27 (October–December), and 6.9% in Q4FY27 (January–March).
• India’s Gross Value Added (GVA) recorded 8.2% real growth in Q1FY27, higher than 7.1% in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
• GVA is an important indicator of economic activity that measures value generated by economic sectors while excluding taxes and subsidies.
• Nominal GVA growth reached 11.5% in Q1FY27, according to the SBI Research report.
• Robust domestic demand was a major driver of India’s economic growth, recording 7.1% growth in Q1FY27.
• Government capital expenditure also supported the strong economic growth momentum during Q1FY27.
• The services sector recorded strong growth of 10% in Q1FY27, contributing significantly to overall economic expansion.
• The manufacturing sector grew by 9.2% in Q1FY27, further supporting India’s growth performance.

• Union Minister of State (MoS) Pabitra Margherita, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), undertook an official visit to Vietnam and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR/Laos) from 26–29 August 2026.
• The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral partnerships between India and the two Southeast Asian countries under India’s Act East Policy.
• In Hanoi, Vietnam, MoS Pabitra Margherita paid tribute at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and held discussions with Lê Minh Hưng and Senior Lieutenant General Le Tan Toi.
• He delivered a keynote address at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and interacted with President Dr. Le Van Loi.
• During his Vietnam visit, he visited Phap Van Pagoda under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a two-day state visit to Uzbekistan from 29 to 30 August 2026, at the invitation of Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan.
• The visit marked PM Narendra Modi’s 4th visit to Uzbekistan.
• The visit coincided with the 15th anniversary of the India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership and the 35th Independence Day of Uzbekistan.
• PM Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, at the Presidential Palace in Tashkent.
• During the bilateral meeting, India and Uzbekistan agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, connectivity, digital technologies, critical minerals, energy, healthcare, education, and culture.
• During the visit, PM Narendra Modi was conferred with Uzbekistan’s highest state honour, the “Oliy Darajali Do’stlik” (Order of Highest Friendship), by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Kuksaroy Presidential Palace, Tashkent.
• The Order of Highest Friendship marked PM Narendra Modi’s 36th global honour.

India–Denmark Enhance Cooperation in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Innovation and Intellectual Property

• The 4th Meeting of the India–Denmark Joint Working Group (JWG) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 24 to 28 August 2026.
• The JWG was held between India’s Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO).
• The meeting aimed to strengthen India–Denmark bilateral cooperation in MSME development, innovation and intellectual property (IP).
• Discussions focused on technology adoption, innovation, intellectual property, technology commercialisation, entrepreneurship and cluster-based MSME development.

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Conference of the Parties (COP17) Held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from August 17–28, 2026

• The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 17 to 28 August 2026.
• The theme of UNCCD COP17 was “Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.”
• The UNCCD COP17 coincided with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), an initiative championed by Mongolia.
• Batmunkh Battsetseg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, chaired the UNCCD COP17.
• Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, led the Indian delegation at UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia.
• Nova (NOVVA Group Pte. Ltd.) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mongolia’s Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Communications (MDDIC).

• The Drought Resilience Investment Facility (DRIF) was co-developed by UNCCD and the Government of Luxembourg as a catalytic financing platform for drought resilience.
• DRIF aims to mobilise up to USD 400 million in public and private capital for drought resilience.
• During the closing session, member parties unanimously approved Egypt as the host of UNCCD COP18 in 2028.
• UNCCD COP18 will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Red Sea resort city of Egypt, in 2028.

Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 Notified to Establish a Common Time Reference Across India

• The Department of Consumer Affairs, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026.
• The Rules establish Indian Standard Time (IST) as the common time reference across the country for legal, administrative, commercial and other official purposes.

Key Highlights

• The introduction of a uniform time reference aims to ensure that important systems and services across India follow accurate and consistent Indian Standard Time.
• The Rules will strengthen the accuracy of time-stamping in banking transactions and digital payment transactions, helping ensure reliable recording of transaction times.
• A common time reference will improve coordination and synchronisation across railways, airports and other transport systems.
• It will also support the effective coordination of emergency services and other time-sensitive services, where accurate timing is critical.
• The Rules are aimed at promoting uniformity, accuracy and consistency in the use of Indian Standard Time across important sectors and official activities.
• The Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 will come into force 180 days from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
• Indian Standard Time is based on 82°30′ East longitude, which passes through Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.

• The programme aims to position India as a major global hub in the semiconductor value chain, covering activities from wafer fabrication to chip production.

• Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India could account for nearly 10% of the global semiconductor industry market in the coming years.
• The government has released notifications for all six pillars of the Semicon India Programme 2.0, marking a major step towards building a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem in India.
• The programme seeks to increase India’s role in the global semiconductor value chain and make the country an indispensable part of the global semiconductor supply chain.
• The government highlighted India’s large talent pool, policy certainty and ease of working as key factors attracting global semiconductor companies to establish manufacturing and design operations in the country.

Tripartite Agreement Signed to Establish First Swimming National Centre of Excellence in Northeast

• A tripartite agreement was signed among the Sports Authority of India, Badminton Association of India and Sports Authority of Assam for establishing a National Centre of Excellence for Swimming in Assam.
• The proposed National Centre of Excellence for Swimming will be established at the Amingaon Sports Complex, Assam, using its Olympic-size swimming pool.
• It will be the first National Centre of Excellence dedicated to swimming in the North Eastern Region.

Key Highlights

• The agreement aims to strengthen sports infrastructure and develop a high-performance ecosystem for swimming in the Northeast.
• The facility will provide swimmers from Assam and other Northeastern states with access to specialised training, professional coaching and high-quality sporting infrastructure closer to their home region.
• The centre will focus on identifying promising swimmers, nurturing emerging talent and providing the necessary support for participation in national and international competitions.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and Energy Efficiency Services Limited Sign Agreement for Smart Domestic Piped Natural Gas Meters

• The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and Energy Efficiency Services Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate demand aggregation and promote the deployment of smart domestic Piped Natural Gas meters across the City Gas Distribution sector.
• The collaboration aims to create a structured ecosystem for faster adoption of smart domestic Piped Natural Gas meters by bringing together City Gas Distribution entities, technology providers, manufacturers, system integrators and other stakeholders.

Key Highlights

• Under the agreement, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board will provide regulatory and technical support by sharing information related to standards, certification, regulatory developments, conformity assessment and inspection concerning smart domestic Piped Natural Gas metering.
• The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board will also facilitate stakeholder consultations and interactions to support the development of the smart metering ecosystem.
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited will undertake demand aggregation for smart meters and coordinate among City Gas Distribution entities and other stakeholders in the smart metering ecosystem.
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited will conduct market assessments and technical evaluations and explore competitive procurement and price discovery mechanisms.
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited will also examine suitable models for supply, installation, operation and maintenance of smart domestic Piped Natural Gas meters.
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited has installed more than 44.5 lakh smart meters across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of these smart meters for a period of 8–10 years.
• The agreement is expected to strengthen the smart metering infrastructure in the City Gas Distribution sector and support the efficient and technology-driven distribution of Piped Natural Gas.

Oil India Signs Agreements for Integrated Compressed Biogas and Waste-to-Energy Projects in Haryana

• Oil Green Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil India Limited, signed Memoranda of Understanding with four municipalities of Haryana — Gurugram, Faridabad, Hisar and Ambala — for developing Integrated Compressed Biogas and Waste-to-Energy Projects.

Key Highlights

• The projects will be developed across four municipal clusters with the following proposed waste-processing capacities:
• Hisar: 500 tonnes per day
• Ambala: 900 tonnes per day
• Faridabad: 1,600 tonnes per day
• Gurugram: 2,000 tonnes per day
• Collectively, the four facilities will have the capacity to scientifically process 5,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day.
• The projects are expected to produce 70–75 tonnes per day of Compressed Biogas and around 50 megawatts of green power.
• The projects will follow an integrated waste processing and resource-recovery approach, involving scientific pre-processing and segregation of municipal solid waste to maximise resource recovery.
• The recyclable fraction of municipal solid waste will be recovered for further use.
• The wet and biodegradable fraction will be utilised for the production of Compressed Biogas.
• The non-recyclable dry fraction will be used for electricity generation through Waste-to-Energy facilities.
• The integrated approach aims to maximise resource recovery, optimise energy recovery from non-recyclable waste and reduce dependence on landfilling.
• The initiative will convert different fractions of municipal solid waste into clean energy, primarily through Compressed Biogas and green electricity.

AVM Shakti Sharma Makes History as First Non-Medical Woman Two-Star Officer in Defence Services

• Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma created history by becoming the first woman officer from the non-medical stream in the Indian Defence Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal, or an equivalent two-star rank.
• She assumed the appointment of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September 2026.
• AVM Shakti Sharma was commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 18 June 1994.
• She brings over three decades of distinguished service and has served across training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters.
• Throughout her career, she spearheaded important institutional initiatives, including the establishment of IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University.
• These IAF Chairs of Excellence were established to promote academic and strategic defence collaboration.
• Shakti Sharma became the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, serving as Principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.
• Her achievement marks a significant milestone in the progression of women officers in the Indian Defence Forces.
• Women officers were inducted into selected non-medical branches of the Armed Forces in 1992, and their roles have expanded significantly over the years.
• Women officers now serve in almost all combat and non-combat branches of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and also hold command appointments.
• Before this milestone, women officers in the medical stream had attained the three-star rank, including Air Marshal, Lieutenant General and Vice Admiral.
• Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, who retired on 31 August 2026 as Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), had represented the highest rank attained by a woman officer before this development.

Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb Assumes Charge as Indian Air Force Air Officer-in-Charge Maintenance

• Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb AVSM VSM assumed charge as the Air Officer-in-Charge Maintenance (AOM) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 1 September 2026.
• After assuming charge, Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, New Delhi, to honour personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
• Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 3 September 1988 in the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) Branch.
• He has extensive field experience with IL-76, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), and Boeing 737-200 aircraft.
• He served as the Lead Engineer and Team Leader of the Air Headquarters Project Management Team responsible for inducting the first IL-78 Flight Refueller Aircraft (FRA) into the IAF in 2003.
• He was also among the pioneers involved in inducting and operationalising the AWACS fleet in the Indian Air Force.
• Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb is an alumnus of the Bangladesh Flight Safety Institute and the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA).
• During his career spanning more than three decades, he held several important field and staff appointments in the Indian Air Force.
• Before his present appointment, he served as Director General (Aircraft), Director General (System), and Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Maintenance Plans) at Air Headquarters.
• In recognition of his distinguished service, he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2015 and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2026.
• Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb AVSM VSM succeeded Air Marshal Sanjiv Ghuratia AVSM VSM, who superannuated on 31 August 2026 after 39 years of distinguished service.

Air Marshal Vivek Hande Assumes Charge as Director General Medical Services (Air) of Indian Air Force

• Air Marshal Vivek Hande AVSM VSM assumed charge as the Director General Medical Services (Air) [DGMS (Air)] on 1 September 2026 on permanent secondment to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
• Air Marshal Vivek Hande is an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.
• He was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1988 and is a gastroenterologist of national repute.
• During his distinguished career, he held several important specialist, clinical and administrative appointments in the Armed Forces Medical Services.
• Air Marshal Vivek Hande has the distinction of serving in all three Services of the Indian Defence Forces — Army, Navy and Air Force.
• As a Flag Officer in the Indian Navy, he commanded the Indian Naval Hospital Ship (INHS) Asvini and subsequently served as its Senior Consultant Medicine.
• After being elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral, he served as Director General (Organisation & Personnel) in the Office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).
• He subsequently took over as Director General Medical Services (Air) on 1 September 2026, marking his permanent secondment to the Indian Air Force.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Reviews 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings, Praises Their Role in Record Defence Production

• Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh reviewed the annual performance of 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) in New Delhi on 1 September 2026.
• The review was attended by Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, and the Chairmen & Managing Directors (CMDs) of the DPSUs.
• The review focused on indigenous defence production, advanced defence technologies, defence exports, supply-chain strengthening and execution of major projects.
• Rajnath Singh commended the DPSUs for strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
• India achieved approximately ₹1.80 lakh crore in defence production during FY 2025–26, with DPSUs contributing ₹1.29 lakh crore.
• The combined turnover of DPSUs increased by 4% year-on-year to ₹1.29 lakh crore during FY 2025–26.
• The cumulative Profit After Tax (PAT) of the DPSUs stood at ₹23,136 crore in FY 2025–26, registering a 6% increase over the previous financial year.
• Defence exports by DPSUs increased by 2% in FY 2025–26 compared with FY 2024–25.
• CMDs of seven DPSUs presented dividend cheques worth a total of ₹3,951 crore to the Government towards its equity shares for FY 2025–26.
• The seven DPSUs were Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), BEML and MIDHANI.
• The remaining DPSUs will hand over their dividend cheques to the Government at a later date.
• Rajnath Singh released four publications focused on self-reliance, indigenisation, innovation and future-ready defence capabilities.
• ‘Aatmanirbhar DPSU – A Journey of DPSUs towards Self-Reliance’ highlights indigenisation of items, new products and new processes to be developed over the next five years.
• ‘DISHA’ is an initiative aimed at providing students with hands-on awareness of defence technologies and modern manufacturing processes through interaction with industries.
• ‘Modernisation Roadmap of HAL’ focuses on transforming HAL into a future-ready aerospace enterprise.
• ‘Indigenisation Roadmap of HAL’ focuses on achieving greater self-reliance in the aerospace and defence sector.

Centre for Development of Telematics Launches 14 Indigenous Quantum Products to Enhance Security of India’s Communication Networks

• The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier telecom Research and Development (R&D) centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, unveiled 14 indigenous Quantum Products.
• The 14 Quantum Products were unveiled during C-DOT’s 43rd Foundation Day celebrations held on 25 August 2026 at the Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
• The products have been developed in the areas of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) to strengthen secure communication systems against emerging threats from quantum computing.
• The Quantum Product Series was launched in the presence of Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), and Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT.

C-DOT’s 14 Indigenous Quantum Products :

• Q-AKSHAY CD is a compact fibre-based QKD system based on Coherent One Way (COW) and Differential Phase Shift (DPS) protocols, designed in a compact 1U size for secure quantum key generation and distribution over fibre networks.
• Q-AKSHAY MD is a fibre-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system based on the Measurement Device Independent (MDI) protocol, offering enhanced security against vulnerabilities associated with measurement devices.
• C-SPD is a Single-Photon Detector that serves as a critical sub-module for quantum communication systems.
• C-RD is a wideband RF driver designed to drive intensity and phase modulators used in quantum communication systems.
• Q-SETU is a quantum-safe encryptor designed to secure Layer 3 communications with a throughput of up to 80 Mbps, using NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms.
• Q-MAHASETU is a commercial-grade quantum-safe encryptor supporting Layer 2/3 networks with throughput of up to 40 Gbps and using NIST PQC algorithms for high-speed quantum-resistant protection.
• Q-VIKRAM is a defence-grade quantum-safe encryptor providing up to 1 Gbps throughput for Layer 2/3 networks and using NIST PQC algorithms to protect sensitive and strategic communications.
• Q-AMOGH is a high-speed quantum-safe optical encryptor providing up to 200 Gbps throughput at Layer 1, using NIST PQC algorithms to secure high-capacity optical communication links.
• Q-DARSHAN is a quantum-safe video IP phone that uses NIST PQC algorithms to protect voice and video communications over IP-based systems.
• Q-VACHAN is a quantum-safe in-line node for IP phones that uses NIST PQC algorithms and can upgrade existing IP phones with quantum security.
• Q-RAQSHAK is a quantum-safe enterprise network solution designed to protect enterprise communications and network infrastructure against current and future cryptographic threats.
• Q-VAAYU is a quantum-safe wireless point-to-point network solution that uses NIST PQC algorithms to secure wireless communication links.
• Q-VAJRA1000 is a quantum-safe access node designed to upgrade existing communication networks with quantum security and supports technologies such as GPON and wireless radios.
• Q-PARAKRAM is a defence-grade quantum-safe encryptor providing up to 1 Gbps throughput for Layer 2/3 networks and uses NIST PQC algorithms along with proprietary algorithms for strategic and defence communications.
• A Quantum Product Series booklet was also launched by the dignitaries, consolidating C-DOT’s indigenous quantum solutions and highlighting its work in QKD, PQC, secure, resilient, and future-ready communication technologies.

Indian Institute of Science Establishes Foundation for Quantum Computing Innovation to Strengthen India’s Quantum Computing Ecosystem under National Quantum Mission

• The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Karnataka, has established the Foundation for Quantum Computing Innovation (FQCI) as a Section 8 not-for-profit company.
• FQCI will function as the Quantum Computing Thematic Hub (QC T-Hub) at IISc under the National Quantum Mission (NQM).
• The National Quantum Mission (NQM) is implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Ministry of Science & Technology (MoS&T).
• FQCI is one of the four thematic hubs established under the National Quantum Mission, bringing together researchers, academic institutions, industry, and startups to develop quantum computing technologies in India.
• FQCI will focus on developing skilled manpower and promoting entrepreneurship in quantum technologies through five programmes: QC Rise, QC Bridge, QC Leap, QC Accel, and QC Quest.
• The hub will conduct research and develop quantum computing technologies across platforms such as photonic quantum systems, superconducting circuits, semiconductor-based quantum devices, neutral atoms, and trapped ions.
• FQCI will establish shared facilities for quantum device fabrication, testing, characterisation, and technology development.
• These shared facilities will provide researchers and companies with access to advanced infrastructure to convert laboratory research into practical quantum technologies.
• The National Quantum Mission (NQM) has an outlay of ₹6,003.65 crore for the period 2023–24 to 2030–31.
• NQM aims to develop quantum computers with 50–1,000 qubits and establish advanced quantum communication infrastructure.
• The quantum communication infrastructure under NQM includes approximately 2,000 km of ground-to-satellite links and inter-city quantum communication networks.

China Tests GJ-21 Stealth UAV as Type 076 Sichuan Nears Completion of Sea Trials

• China tested its GJ-21 stealth Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as the Type 076 amphibious assault ship “Sichuan” entered the final phase of sea trials.
• The development marks a major step towards integrating unmanned combat systems with naval operations and advancing unmanned naval warfare.
• GJ-21 is a naval variant of the GJ-11 stealth drone, which is already in service with China.
• The GJ-11 stealth drone was revealed in 2019 and publicly showcased in September 2025.
• The GJ-21 stealth UAV is designed for carrier-based reconnaissance and strike missions, with recent test flights conducted over Huludao, Liaoning Province.
• The Type 076 “Sichuan” is China’s first Type 076 amphibious assault ship, with a full-load displacement of more than 40,000 tonnes.
• The Sichuan has a flight deck measuring approximately 250 metres long and 62 metres wide.
• The ship is equipped with an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), which enables the launch of fixed-wing aircraft and stealth UAVs.
• The Type 076 Sichuan is described as the world’s first amphibious ship capable of launching fixed-wing aircraft and stealth UAVs, effectively giving it a drone-carrier role.
• The integration of EMALS allows the ship to launch Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) such as the GJ-21, strengthening China’s unmanned naval warfare capabilities.

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances 2026

• The United Nations International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is observed annually on 30 August to honour victims of enforced disappearances and promote justice, truth and accountability.
• 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, the only universal treaty specifically dedicated to preventing and eradicating enforced disappearances.
• The 2026 slogan is “Victims first. Actions now”, highlighting the rights of victims to truth, justice and reparation and calling for stronger action to prevent enforced disappearances.
• The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/65/209 on 21 December 2010, officially declaring 30 August as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
• Through the same resolution, the United Nations General Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

• World Coconut Day is observed annually on 2 September to highlight the importance of coconuts and their contribution to food, agriculture, trade, health, beauty products and livelihoods.
• The official theme of World Coconut Day 2026 is “Coconuts in times of uncertainty: Securing food, energy, and livelihoods”.
• The International Coconut Community is the main organisation associated with the observance of World Coconut Day.

• Coconut water is widely consumed as a beverage, while coconut milk is used in cooking and traditional cuisines. Coconut oil is used in cooking, cosmetics and personal care products.
• Coir, obtained from the coconut husk, is used to manufacture ropes, mats, brushes and other products, highlighting the sustainability and versatility of the coconut.
• World Coconut Day also raises awareness about the role of coconuts in agriculture, tropical ecosystems, sustainability and community livelihoods.
• World Coconut Day was first observed in 2009 and is associated with the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, which is now known as the International Coconut Community.
• 2 September was selected as World Coconut Day because it commemorates the founding day of the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community.
• The observance aims to recognise the economic, agricultural and social importance of coconut production, particularly in tropical and coconut-growing regions.
• Major coconut-producing countries in the Asian-Pacific region, including India, Indonesia and the Philippines, have strong economic and livelihood connections with coconut cultivation and coconut-based industries.
