India’s Index of Industrial Production Growth Eases to 6.7% in July 2026 Amid Weak Rural Consumption

• India’s industrial growth stood at 6.7% in July 2026, compared with 8.8% in June 2026, indicating a slowdown in industrial activity.
• The July 2026 IIP growth of 6.7% was the second-highest growth recorded since December 2025.
• The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and represented the third release under the new IIP series.
• June 2026 IIP growth was revised upward from the provisional 7.3% to 8.8% in the latest release.
• The July industrial performance was mainly supported by the Manufacturing and Electricity sectors, while the Mining sector contracted.
• The Manufacturing sector grew by 7.3% in July 2026, compared with 9.5% in June 2026 and 5.1% in July 2025.
• Industries such as beverages, wood, paper, and non-metallic minerals contributed to the relatively strong manufacturing growth in July 2026.
• The Capital Goods sector recorded a strong 16.1% growth in July 2026, marking its fourth consecutive month of double-digit growth.
• The Capital Goods sector has recorded double-digit growth in 9 of the last 12 months, despite operating on a high base.
• The Infrastructure sector grew by 6.9% in July 2026, compared with 8.8% in June 2026 and 11.2% in July 2025.
• The Mining sector contracted by 0.9% in July 2026, compared with a strong 10.7% growth in July 2025, mainly due to a high base effect.
• The latest data indicated a divergence in India’s consumption trends, with rural consumption showing signs of weakness.

India’s Financial Inclusion Index Climbs from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026

• India’s Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index) increased from 9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026, indicating deeper access to credit, insurance, savings and digital payments.
• The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PM-JDY) accounts increased nearly four times since 2015 to reach 09 crore accounts as of 19 August 2026.
• PM-JDY deposits increased nearly 20 times, rising from ₹15,670 crore in March 2015 to ₹3,16,514 crore as of 19 August 2026.
• Out of the total PM-JDY accounts, 95 crore accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas, while 13.14 crore accounts are in urban and metropolitan areas.
• As of 19 August 2026, there were 32.92 crore female beneficiaries under PM-JDY, highlighting the scheme’s contribution to gender equality in financial access.
• The increase in PM-JDY deposits reflects growing saving habits among low-income households, increased trust in formal banking and deeper participation in the formal financial system.
• Nearly 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued to PM-JDY account holders, supporting greater adoption of digital transactions.
• RuPay Debit Card is a domestic debit card provided to PM-JDY account holders and is accepted at ATMs and most Point of Sale (PoS) machines.
• The PM-JDY scheme initially focused on providing a bank account to “every household” and later expanded its focus to ensure that “every unbanked adult” has access to a bank account.
• PM-JDY provides underserved and low-income groups with basic banking services, need-based credit, remittances, insurance and pension facilities.
• PM-JDY accounts are eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and various government schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PM-JJBY).
• PM-JDY account holders can also access Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY) and the MUDRA scheme.
• An overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000 is available to one PM-JDY account holder per household, subject to 6 months of satisfactory operation of the account.

India’s Rice Exports to 26 Key Markets Surpass Three-Year Average: Indian Rice Exporters Federation

• India’s rice exports to 26 priority markets reached ₹23,476 crore and 4.79 million tonnes during November 2025–March 2026.
• The data was analysed by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) on 26 August 2026, using data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S).
• Compared with the corresponding three-year average, rice export value increased by 1.1%, while export volume increased by 5.6%.

• Rice is a major agricultural export of India, comprising basmati and non-basmati rice, and India is among the world’s largest rice producers and exporters.
• The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recorded the highest year-on-year growth in export value at 65%, reaching ₹3,859.04 crore, while export volume increased by 64%.
• Belgium recorded a 53.8% increase in export value and a 44.5% increase in export volume.
• Germany recorded a 33.5% increase in export value and a 24.6% increase in export volume.
• France recorded a 31.3% increase in export value and a 32.9% increase in export volume.
• The United Kingdom (UK) recorded a 26.9% increase in export value and a 25.6% increase in export volume.
• South Africa recorded a 26% increase in export value and a 42.9% increase in export volume.
• Kenya recorded a 22.3% increase in export value and a 34.1% increase in export volume.
• Mexico recorded a 22.1% increase in export value and a 50.9% increase in export volume.
• Senegal recorded a 22.9% increase in rice export volume, emerging as an important destination.
• Eleven of the 26 priority markets recorded year-on-year growth in both export value and volume.
• Eight markets, including the UAE, UK, Belgium, Germany, France and Mexico, recorded four-year highs in both export value and volume.
• Iran accounts for around 7% of India’s global rice shipments, with exports expected to continue through alternative payment routes involving the UAE, Germany, China and Turkey.
• The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and IREF are promoting a cuisine-led approach by matching Indian rice varieties with local food preferences in overseas markets.
• The cuisine-led strategy considers aroma, texture, starch content, grain length, absorption and cooking performance to promote suitable Indian rice varieties.
• The strategy aims to shift rice exports from a general commodity-based approach towards promoting specific rice varieties suited to particular cuisines.
• The Bharat International Rice Conference 2026 will be held from 23–25 October 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, featuring international and regional dishes paired with selected Indian rice varieties.
• Exports to the UK, France and Mexico recorded combined growth of 2% in value and 26.3% in volume during November 2025–March 2026.
• In Mexico, Kenya and South Africa, export volume growth exceeded value growth, showing that higher shipment volumes did not necessarily result in proportionate increases in export earnings.
• Rice export performance is influenced by prices, inventories, currency movements, import policies, freight costs and overall demand.

Himachal Pradesh to Establish First Ozone-Based Drinking Water Treatment Project

• Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state’s first ozone-based drinking water treatment project is being established in Dehra area of Kangra district.
• The project aims to provide clean and safe drinking water to people in the region.
• The Himachal Pradesh Government has allocated ₹46 crore for the project, which is planned to be implemented in other areas of the state as well.

Key Highlights

• Under the project, ozone gas will be used to disinfect water and improve its taste.
• The state government has initiated the process of providing benefits under the Mukhyamantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar Yojana, with surveys being conducted in Gram Panchayats.
• Under the scheme, extremely poor families will receive financial assistance and 300 units of free electricity. The scheme is expected to be rolled out on 2 October 2026.
• The Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana has been launched to involve youth and women's groups in forest plantation and protection activities.
• Under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana, Self-Help Groups will receive ₹1.20 lakh financial assistance, along with incentives linked to the survival of plantations.
• The state government is also strengthening the education sector by opening Central Board of Secondary Education schools and planning to establish more such schools.
• A veterinary hospital will also be established at Baddal Thor to strengthen veterinary services in the Dehra area.

Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances Receives Rajbhasha Utkrishtta Sammaan 2025–26

• The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances has been awarded the Rajbhasha Utkrishtta Sammaan 2025–26 by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs.
• The award recognises the department’s sustained excellence in implementing Official Language policies and promoting the use of Hindi in official work.
• The award is given under the category of ministries and departments having fewer than 300 employees.
• The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances received the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar – First Prize for two consecutive years, 2023–24 and 2024–25.

Key Highlights

• Under the two-year rule, a ministry or department receiving the first prize for two consecutive years is generally not eligible for the award in the following year.
• Despite this rule, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances was selected for the Rajbhasha Utkrishtta Sammaan 2025–26 as a special recognition for its sustained excellence in Official Language implementation.
• The award will be presented during the Hindi Diwas Sammelan in Navi Mumbai on 14 September 2026.
• Hindi Diwas is observed annually on 14 September to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as the Official Language of the Union of India by the Constituent Assembly on 14 September 1949.

• The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation announced three recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2026, regarded as the “Nobel Prize of Asia”.
• The 2026 awardees are:
• Tommy Koh – Singapore: Diplomat and international law expert known for his role in negotiating the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He also contributed to establishing the Institute of Policy Studies, Centre for International Law and Tembusu College at the National University of Singapore.
• Runa Khan – Bangladesh: Social entrepreneur known for establishing a floating hospital that uses Bangladesh’s river network to provide healthcare services to remote communities. She later founded the non-governmental organisation Friendship.
• Bo Kyi – Myanmar: Human rights activist and former political prisoner who helped establish the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, which supports political prisoners and their families.

• Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi was conferred Uzbekistan’s highest state honour for foreign leaders — the ‘Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik’ Order by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
• The honour recognises PM Modi’s contribution to strengthening friendship and bilateral relations between India and Uzbekistan.
• PM Modi dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India and the centuries-old friendship and shared heritage between India and Uzbekistan.

• Under the first agreement, Bharat Kala Bhawan, Banaras Hindu University, will serve as the institutional partner for the inaugural Banaras Biennale 2026.

Key Highlights

• The Banaras Biennale 2026 will be a month-long cultural event held across Varanasi from 27 November to 31 December 2026.
• The theme of the inaugural Banaras Biennale is “KASHI / LIGHT - City as Sensorium”, focusing on the city's living cultural heritage.
• Banaras Hindu University will lead academic engagement, student participation and public programming during the Biennale, including exhibitions, craft and textile showcases, museum and gallery events, music performances, scholarly discussions and masterclasses.
• The second agreement establishes a Confederation of Indian Industry Education to Employment and Enterprise Career Lounge at the Banaras Hindu University campus in collaboration with the Placement and Internship Cell.
• The Career Lounge will provide career counselling, soft-skills training, internships, apprenticeships, placement assistance, job fairs and entrepreneurship mentoring.
• The initiative aims to strengthen the transition of students from education to employment and entrepreneurship.

Department of Telecommunications and Centre for Development of Telematics Sign Five-Year Agreement for Optical Network Test Bed

• The Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, signed a five-year agreement with the Centre for Development of Telematics to establish a state-of-the-art End-to-End Optical Network Test Bed.
• The Test Bed will be established at the Centre for Development of Telematics Campus in New Delhi with funding and support from the Department of Telecommunications.
• The agreement was signed to create a real-world environment for the development, testing, validation and commercialisation of optical communication technologies developed by Indian startups and industry players.
• The initiative aims to bridge the gap between laboratory-stage innovations and market-ready technologies, supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening India’s next-generation communication infrastructure.

• The Test Bed will integrate technologies covering optical core, optical access and quantum security, along with advanced third-party testing and measurement tools.
• It will function as a shared national resource for innovation, testing, validation, skill development and commercialisation in the optical communication sector.
• The initiative will provide students, researchers, startups and industry professionals with opportunities for hands-on training and exposure to advanced optical networking technologies.
• The project will be implemented in two phases:
• Set-up Phase: Years 1–2, focusing on establishing the required optical core, optical access and quantum security infrastructure and completing the rollout of the Test Bed.

• Centre for Development of Telematics: A premier telecommunications technology research and development centre under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, focused on developing indigenous, secure, standards-compliant and deployment-ready telecommunications technologies.
• The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s indigenous optical communication ecosystem, promote technological self-reliance and accelerate the commercialisation of next-generation communication technologies.

Central Industrial Security Force and Drone Federation of India Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Counter-Drone Security

• The Central Industrial Security Force and the Drone Federation of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Central Industrial Security Force Headquarters to strengthen counter-drone capabilities.
• The agreement aims to enhance the security preparedness of personnel deployed at critical installations against emerging aerial threats.
• The partnership will focus on capacity building, applied research, structured training and operational preparedness related to drone technology and counter-drone systems.
• The initiative will facilitate structured engagement between the Central Industrial Security Force, Indian drone startups and technology companies.
• The collaboration is particularly important for sensitive installations in sectors such as aviation, nuclear power, space and oil refining.

• The Central Industrial Security Force currently provides security to around 370 units across India.
• The Central Industrial Security Force has been designated as the nodal agency for handling aerial threats at critical installations under its security cover.

Bihar and Jharkhand Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Sone River Water Sharing

• Bihar and Jharkhand signed a Memorandum of Understanding for sharing the waters of the Sone River in the presence of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah.
• The agreement resolves a nearly 25-year-old inter-state water dispute and will improve water availability for irrigation and drinking purposes.
• In Bihar, the agreement will benefit Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Gaya and Patna districts.
• In Jharkhand, Palamu, Garhwa and other regions will benefit from improved availability of water for irrigation and drinking purposes.
• Amit Shah described the agreement as an example of ‘Team Bharat’ and cooperative federalism, emphasising dialogue-based resolution of inter-state disputes.
• The agreement is the fourth major inter-state water-related agreement reached in 2026 through efforts involving the Inter-State Council.

• Narmada Award Settlement: On 7 July 2026, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh signed an agreement to settle outstanding payments related to the Sardar Sarovar Project through a one-time settlement.
• Yamuna Water Project: On 29 June 2026, Rajasthan and Haryana signed an agreement for the project. Around 580 Million Cubic Metres of water will be conveyed from the Yamuna Canal to Rajasthan through three underground pipelines.
• Kishau Multipurpose Project: On 16 June 2026, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan reached a consensus on implementing the project.
• Under the Kishau Multipurpose Project, the Central Government will provide 90% of the funding for the water component, while the six participating states will bear the remaining 10%.
• The Sone River is an important tributary of the Ganga River and flows through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar.

• Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, laid the foundation stone for the ₹472-crore T-72 and T-90 Tank Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on 27 August 2026.
• The Vehicle Factory Jabalpur is a production unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), which will establish the new tank overhaul facility.
• The main objective of the project is to strengthen India’s indigenous Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks.
• The facility will enhance the operational availability, maintenance and lifecycle support of the Army’s armoured fleet.
• The new facility will have an annual capacity to overhaul 80 tanks.
• The Indian Army requires around 230 tanks to be overhauled annually, while the existing Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai, has an annual overhaul capacity of 150 tanks.
• The Jabalpur facility will therefore help bridge the existing overhaul capacity gap and ensure faster availability of refurbished tanks to the Indian Army.

Scientists Propose Suitcase-Sized CosmoCube Lunar Mission to Explore the Early Universe

• CosmoCube is a proposed suitcase-sized satellite being developed by an international team led by the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (UK).
• The primary objective of CosmoCube is to study the early universe by detecting extremely faint radio signals originating from more than 5 billion years ago.
• The mission will focus on the Cosmic Dark Ages, the period between the Big Bang and the formation of the first stars.
• During the Cosmic Dark Ages, the universe was largely filled with neutral hydrogen, which produced a characteristic 21-centimetre radio signal.
• CosmoCube is proposed to orbit the Moon, using the far side of the Moon as a natural shield against radio interference originating from Earth.
• During each two-hour orbit, CosmoCube is expected to spend approximately 40 minutes behind the Moon, where it can observe the universe with reduced terrestrial radio interference.
• The proposed mission duration of CosmoCube is two years, during which it could collect approximately 1,000 hours of observations.
• CosmoCube will observe at extremely low radio frequencies of around 10–50 MHz to detect signals from the early universe.
• A lightweight radio antenna will be used to detect the ancient hydrogen signal associated with the Cosmic Dark Ages.
• Onboard systems will help identify and distinguish radio interference generated by the spacecraft itself, improving the reliability of the observations.
• The observations from CosmoCube could provide new insights into the Cosmic Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn, particularly the emergence of the first stars and galaxies.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana: Affordable Crop Insurance Scheme for Farmers

• Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) was launched on 18 February 2016 to provide affordable crop insurance and protect farmers against losses caused by natural calamities, adverse weather, pests and diseases.
• PMFBY provides crop insurance coverage from prevented sowing and standing-crop losses to specified post-harvest losses.
• The Union Budget 2026–27 allocated ₹12,200 crore for PMFBY, reaffirming the government’s focus on crop insurance and farmer coverage.
• PMFBY has adopted technology-driven initiatives such as YES-TECH (Yield Estimation System based on Technology) and WINDS (Weather Information Network and Data System).
• YES-TECH and WINDS aim to make crop-yield assessment and claim settlement faster, fairer and more transparent.
• Under PMFBY, farmers pay a maximum premium of 2% of the sum insured for Kharif foodgrain and oilseed crops.
• Farmers pay a maximum premium of 1.5% of the sum insured for Rabi foodgrain and oilseed crops.
• Farmers pay a maximum premium of 5% of the sum insured for commercial and horticultural crops.

• Rasonque (daraxonrasib) is an oral, once-daily tablet developed by Revolution Medicines, Inc., headquartered in Redwood City, California, USA.
• Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common type of pancreatic cancer and is generally classified as an exocrine malignancy.
• Metastatic PDAC refers to pancreatic cancer that has spread beyond the pancreas to other parts of the body.
• Daraxonrasib is a multi-selective RAS(ON) inhibitor that targets mutated KRAS, an important driver of tumour growth.
• KRAS mutations are found in approximately 90% of pancreatic cancers, making KRAS an important target for pancreatic cancer treatment.
• KRAS belongs to the RAS family of genes, which play an important role in cell growth and signalling.
• The Phase 3 RASolute 302 clinical trial reported a median overall survival of 13.2 months for patients treated with daraxonrasib, compared with 7 months for patients receiving standard chemotherapy.
• The US FDA reviewed Rasonque through its Real-Time Oncology Review (RTOR) pilot programme, which is designed to facilitate faster review of promising cancer treatments.

• The 4th Annual Dihing Patkai National Park Biodiversity and Butterfly Trail was conducted from 28 July to 31 July 2026.
• The 2026 biodiversity trail surveyed rainforest areas of Assam and parts of Arunachal Pradesh and documented more than 260 butterfly species across all surveyed locations.
• The survey recorded around 60 butterfly species at Jaipur, 57 species in the Deomali Range of Tirap district, 68 species at Siring Mamoroni village in the Lakhipathar Range, and 78 species at the Saraipung Range.

• The relocation marked the launch of Project STRIPES, a conservation initiative involving the Maharashtra Forest Department and the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare.
• Project STRIPES stands for Star Tortoise Repatriation Initiative Protecting Endangered Species and focuses on the rehabilitation, transportation, and release of trafficked tortoises into suitable natural habitats.
• The Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans) is a terrestrial reptile found in India and Sri Lanka and belongs to the Testudinidae family.
• The Indian Star Tortoise is named for the distinctive star-like radiating patterns on its carapace (shell).
• In India, the Indian Star Tortoise is listed under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and is also protected under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
• The rescued tortoises had been seized during enforcement operations in Mumbai and Thane as part of action against wildlife trafficking.
• Before their release, the tortoises were kept under care at facilities including the Thane Transit Treatment Centre, TCPCA, PAWS, and WWA.
• A 10-member team transported the tortoises for more than 800 km in a specialised wildlife ambulance.
• During transportation, the tortoises were regularly monitored for hydration and health, while medical examinations were conducted after their arrival.
• The tortoises were released in batches following health checks, with a scientifically determined male-to-female ratio used for effective population management.
• Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) is a major protected area in Maharashtra and is located in Chandrapur district.
• Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve comprises Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary and is managed under India’s tiger conservation framework.
